The Perfect Negroni
I spent many hot summer nights outside Bar Florio in Piazza San Domenico, sipping Negroni’s, speaking Italian with locals, listening to music, observing neighborhood meetings and political rallies, laughing with friends, munching aperitivi, and practicing the art of “il belle far niente” – the beauty of doing nothing.
The Perfect Negroni:
This classic Italian cocktail might be the only Italian cocktail that calls for hard alcohol. It is certainly the only one I ever found in Italy.
1 oz. Gin
1 oz. Red vermouth
1 oz. Campari
1 Dash bitters
Squeeze of lemon
Squeeze of orange
Serve in a bucket glass over ice and garnish with an orange slice.
NOTE: You can create a tall version of this drink by adding sparkling water, more ice and serving it in a tall glass. It is lovely to sip this way on a hot summer evening.
